#NonprofitSpotlight: Better Basics
.
What They Do:
Better Basics provides literacy intervention and enrichment programs for students in Birmingham, Fairfield, Midfield City Schools, and Talladega County Schools in Alabama. Their programs empower their community's youth by helping children learn to read, comprehend, retain, and ultimately learn. This increases students’ confidence levels, infusing literature into children’s homes and exposing them to multi-cultural arts and enrichment programs.
.
Better Basics provides a variety of programs that enrich children's academic lives. Programs like 30 A Day (a book club for 3rd-5th graders that reads for 30 minutes each day prior to a discussion) academic tutoring, Summer Brain Gain (a summer enrichment program), and math and reading intervention programs keep children engaged.
.
Better Basics, partnered with The Junior League of Birmingham, is also the Jefferson County affiliate of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. The Imagination Library delivers a free book every month from birth through a child’s fifth birthday to promote early childhood literacy. This program gives parents in lower-income neighborhoods the tools to help start their child on the path to life-long learning.
